Unexpected variation of the codeine/morphine ratio following fatal heroin overdose.

2014

Postmortem samples from 14 cases of suspected heroin overdose were subjected to a preliminary systematic toxicological analysis in order to highlight the presence of unknown exogenous compounds (e.g., drugs of abuse, alcohol) that may have played a role in the mechanism of death. This analysis unveiled histories of poly-drug use in seven of the cases under investigation. Moreover, the concentrations of morphine and codeine in the brain were also investigated, and the results were compared with the data obtained from the blood specimens. The concentration of morphine in blood ranged from 33 to 688 ng/mL, while the concentration of codeine ranged from 0 to 193 ng/mL. However, in the brain, th…

Synthesis and characterization of titanium(IV) complexes containing the diphenylphosphino- and diphenylthiophosphoryl-functionalized cyclopentadienyl…

2000

The trimethylsilyl cyclopentadiene derivative C5H4(SiMe3)PPh2 (1) was treated with TiCl4 to give the air- and moisture-sensitive mono(cyclopentadienyl) compound Ti(η5-C5H4PPh2)Cl3 (4). Reaction of 4 with Mg(CH2C6H5)2(THF)2 gave Ti(η5-C5H4PPh2)(CH2C6H5)3 (5). Reactions of the lithium and thallium derivatives M{C5H4P(S)Ph2} (M=Li (2), Tl (3)) with one equiv. of TiCl4 afforded the mono(cyclopentadienyl) complex Ti{η5-C5H4P(S)Ph2}Cl3 (6), whereas reaction with 0.5 equiv. of TiCl4 gave the bis(cyclopentadienyl) complex Ti{η5-C5H4P(S)Ph2}2Cl2 (8). Compound 6 was also isolated as a minor product from the reaction of Ti{η5-C5H4P(S)Ph2}2Cl2 (8) with one equiv. of TiCl4. The major product was identif…

Redistribution, selection, and trade

2017

Abstract This paper examines the distributional effects of international trade in a general equilibrium model with heterogeneous agents and a welfare state redistributing income. The redistribution scheme is financed by a progressive income tax and gives the same absolute transfer to all individuals. Ceteris paribus, international trade leads to an increase in income per capita but also to higher income inequality on two fronts. Inter-group inequality between managers and workers increases, and intra-group inequality within the group of managers goes up as well. We show that for a given tax rate, there is an endogenous increase in the size of the welfare state that works against the increas…

Do fire severity effects on soil change in space and time in the short-term? What ash tells us

2013

n the absence of data, the impact of fire, especially wildfires, is measured analysing the fire severity. This post-fire assessment is very useful because allow to identify the degree of destruction imposed by the fire. Among the techniques used to determine fire severity, ash colour is often used, that permit identify the degree of organic matter consumption (darker ash uncompleted combustion, lighter ash completed combustion). The objective of this paper was observed if fire severity changes in space and time, according to ash colour analysis, applying an index. The ash colour analysis was carried out one and fifteen days after the fire. In this area we identified ash with four different …

Gender Injustices in Neoliberal Times. On Nancy Fraser’s Proposal

2018

Nonlinear radiation imprisonment in magneto-optical vapor traps

2008

We analyze nonlinear radiation imprisonment (RI) effects in an optically thick vapor in different temperature regimes. An analytical approach is proposed to treat nonlinear decay problems. Special attention is paid to vapor samples having curvilinear geometries (cylinder, sphere) and being excited by a strong laser pulse. We derive a number of new formulas for different radiative trapping factors as functions of opacity and propose a general approach for RI evaluation allowing us to deal with samples both at room and low, or very low, temperatures, such as those customarily achieved in magneto-optical trap (MOT) experiments. As a result, we predict a "subnatural" decay of radiation escaping…

Measuring soil erosion by field plots: Understanding the sources of variation

2006

Soil erosion plots of different types and sizes are widely used to investigate the geomorphological processes related to soil erosion. This field method has provided a variety of results, depending on the characteristics of the plots, on their suitability to reflect the ecosystem's characteristics and on the objectives of each particular research. The coupling of real soil loss at patch and slope scale within a landscape and the values obtained by field plots depend, among other things, on how good the methodology performs over a set of ecosystem properties, such as those related with temporal and spatial scale issues, disturbance and representation of natural conditions, and the ability to…
